Gothic Make-Up

As different as the splinter groups in the black scene are, so is their make-up. It's quite simple with the EBMers, because they don't wear make-up at all. After all, most of them are men who don't want to look feminine at all. The wavers are a bit more make-up-friendly, but they usually make do with kohl, black eye shadow and red lipstick. Some decorate their eyes with ornaments or imitate idols like Siouxsie Sioux or Steve Strange in terms of make-up. However, the indisputable law is the kohl line. Nothing works without it - neither for men nor for women. Batcavers wear make-up similar to that of wavers, but use more colours and love artificial, dramatic eyelashes. Make-up is particularly elaborate for goths and black romantics. They use what is known as "dead make-up". This means they whiten their skin, shave off their eyebrows and draw them back in a particularly strict manner. Their make-up is characterised by dark eyes and black lips. The black romantics also work with glued-on rhinestones and painted ornaments, while the goths occasionally stick symbols on their foreheads, such as moons, pentagrams or ankhs. The basic rule in the gothic scene is that men, women and everyone else put on make-up equally. There are no gender-specific differences.
