Films, TV Series & Radio

Scary films, vampire films, horror films: There have been quite a number of stories on the screen that have influenced the gothic scene visually and also in terms of content. With Nosferatu, the archetype of the creepy vampire came to the screen, closely followed by Dracula with Bela Lugosi. One of the most famous songs by the dark wave band Bauhaus is called "Bela Lugosi`s dead". Later they played the song in the scene of another vampire film called "Desire", in which David Bowie also had a role. The song spent 131 weeks in the independent charts in the UK, according to Wikipedia. The romantic faction of the gothic scene likes to skip these early vampire films and stick to new film adaptations like "Bram Stoker`s Dracula" or "Interview with a Vampire" in terms of outfits and charisma, which focus on romantic ambience and feelings.

Scary films and horror films also have a tradition in the black scene. They are still played on screens at gothic parties and complement gothic band performances in the background. Monsters, ghosts, possessed people, werewolves and zombies appear here. Godzilla, Tarantula, Frankenstein, Psycho and Necronomicon are just a few films of this genre.

With the Addams Family, the black scene also had access to plenty of outfit inspiration in the field of series. Even today, Morticia Addams is a real styling role model. More current series that appeal to the goth scene are, for example, Penny Dreadful or light fare like Buffy or Lucifer. In principle, every film and every series that deals with the supernatural or the occult, with monsters, vampires or witches, has Gothic potential. The large field of fantasy films also provides new visual developments in the gothic scene time and again. Especially the romantic figures and the villains are copied. The trend of horn accessories, for example, was triggered by the film Maleficent. Tim Burton's animated films are also particularly popular.

A very important film is "The Crow", based on an original by James O'Barr, which was released in 1994. The character of Eric Draven triggered a whole wave of imitators who carried the protagonist's formative style into the scene.

Spook, horror and creepiness also existed on the radio before the television era. Scary and horror stories from literature were read aloud. More recent radio play series are, for example, Ghost Shocker, the Macabros series or John Sinclair. Gothic motifs can even be found in computer games, for example in the Resident Evil series or Alone in the Dark.
