Memento Mori

It can be doubted that every Goth knows the rhyming sermon "Memento Mori". But the idea behind it is probably familiar to every representative of the black scene. "Remember that you are mortal." Actually, Goths are reminded of this all by themselves, after all, their homes are full of skulls, they love the morbid, appreciate the melancholy of cemeteries and listen to sad music that is also about death. Some representatives of the black scene even build shelves or tables out of real coffins or drive hearses. So the idea of "Memento Mori" is omnipresent. But what is behind it?

Originally, religion is behind "Memento Mori", after all, it is a rhyming sermon, originated in a monastery. In principle, it says that everything in the world is consecrated to death and thus meaningless. This world is transient, the hereafter is eternal. Many centuries later, "Memento Mori" is today more of an exhortation used to devote oneself to life while one can, in view of the threat of death. This is probably also the idea that most Goths would agree with, while the thing about the afterlife and this world has gone somewhat out of fashion. In any case, the admonition is a most popular shirt or tattoo motif in the Gothic scene.
