by Markus Wosgien (21.11.2007) With their debut, "Bergtatt", twelve years ago, Ulver created a unique Black Metal-classic. Afterwards, their fans had to stand some a stylistic change, and meanwhile, the Norwegians have settled between Neo Folk, avant-garde and experimental music. Also their new masterpiece, "Shadows over the sun", is an opus inviting you to chill and offering some excellent relaxation therapies. The music is mystic and mysterious, enchanting and imaginative, and if you manage to open up to it, the album is like a horror movie from the 70s. Ulver were supported by the Oslo Session String Quartet, as well as numerous guest musicians, including trumpets. So, this album may not be first choice for the die hard Black Metal fan but if you are receptive for soundtracks and ambient sounds, "Shadows over the sun" is definitely a magical experience for you. So lean back, relax and let yourself be seduced and inspired.
