The classic 'Vargnatt' 1993 Demo by the Norwegian legend marks 30 years since its release, including an extra track. The Norwegian band Ulver, rooted in black metal in their early years, became known for their high-quality soundscapes and exquisite experimental and electronic art as part of their continuous and ever-changing development. With their preference for folk-inspired black metal in their early years and their compositions, even then considered eclectic and unconventional compared to the rougher and more primitive performances of other emerging acts in the scene, Ulver has significantly shaped the genre since their founding in the early 90s. They produced a unique and celebrated trilogy of early works, released in rapid succession, starting with their monumental debut 'Bergtatt' in 1995, followed by the quieter, acoustic-influenced 'Kveldssanger' the following year, and concluding with the wilder and more intense eruption of 'Nattens Madrigal' in 1997. However, before this highly regarded trilogy, the Album 'Vargnatt' was released in 1993. This was Ulver's first foray into the wilderness and an extraordinary debut demo, where the later implementation of acoustic guitars was used amidst melodic, often complex and intricate arrangements, created and performed with an already advanced degree of musical skill. This early incarnation of Ulver also included Carl-Michael Eide from Aura Noir/Ved Buens Ende on drums and Robin 'Mean' Malmberg from the Norwegian pioneers Mysticum on bass guitar. This edition of 'Vargnatt' is being released 30 years after its original release. The sound itself comes from the original DAT, and this release includes the bonus track 'Vargnatt', which was recorded live in 1993 at Bootleg TV in Oslo and is sourced from the original U-Matic with the kind permission of the Norwegian National Library.
