by Matthias Mader (18.07.2008) Mucc is a Japanese band preferring grey instead of wild colours - that’s a surprise. But Mucc isn’t any average band from the land of the rising sun just hopping on the J-Rock bandwagon... Far from it - they started in 1997 and belong to the founders of modern Japanese Rock/Metal long before the hype has started. 2005, they played for the first time in Europe (at Wacken Open Air), and their new release, "Shion", is already their eighth studio album. Interesting tracks like "Nuritsubusurana enji" or "Shiva" demonstrate this long experience - Mucc don’t focus on cheesy effects or colourful hair, but on solid songwriting. Um, "solid" maybe being the wrong adjective because this mixture of Metal, Industrial, Punk, Rock and Japanese Folklore does sound considerably exotic to western ears (Think Rammstein in the USA here, and you have the effect). A great record, on one level with Slipknot, Linkin Park or Korn - just more original!
