by Oliver Kube (13.06.2008) HIM, Negative, The Rasmus, The 69 Eyes, LAB, Reflexion etc.: there seems to be an inexhaustible supply of top goth rockers with an irresistible romantic pop appeal from Finland. Since their 2006 release of "Divine insanity", Lovex are also part of this illustrous circle: the debut of the sextet from Tampere easily made the top 20 of the German album charts at that time. It'll be a déjà vu this time because "Pretend and surrender" is not a tad worse than its predecessor: songs like the majestic opener "If she’s near", vibrant but nevertheless wonderfully melodic "Take a shot" and "Ordinary day" or pompous epic ballads like "Different light" are a token of quality. The 80s and 90s are the roots of their songs and sounds - no surprises here, but front man Theon & Co. don't seem to care. They're right - no need to worry if your stuff is that convincing, effective and vigorous.
