They are really "indestructible": Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, Matt Freeman and Brett Reed alias Rancid. One of the most constant and most uncompromising Ska-Punk-bands ever. Just because this quartet from San Francisco has been around for 12 years now doing their very own thing and do everything to remain free and independent still writing the world's best 1-2-3-hymns since the Ramones. Just energy-loaded, angry and aggressive Punk-Rock with an obvious British stamp on it (Clash, 999, Vibrators), with some casual Ska-excursions, beer-soaking singalong-vocals, snotty lyrics, great guitars and an irresistible pop-appeal. Because no matter how much latent anger is in the songs of the tattooed mid-thirties - they have a hand for good, catchy melodies, too, like in "Fall Back Down" or "Arrested In Shanghai". Simply because they know that harsh words in a soft package can be double effective. That subversiveness is a matter of cynicism and acceptance is a matter of class. And of that they have more than enough. The punk album of the year 2003! (Marcel Anders - 03/10)
