The reformed cult doomers, Candlemass call their comeback album simply "Candlemass", containing ten top notch compositions. That Candlemass are cult doesn't need to be discussed and they perfectly prove on this album why this is so. as if they never had a time-out, the high priests of doom metal celebrate their vision of slow motion banging. Beside typical doom tracks that remind me of the old heydays, the guys around Leif Edling sped it up in between, too leading to such ecstatic tracks, like the great "Mars and volcanos" (one of the best songs this band has ever written!) or "Born in a tank". Hymns that simply provoke uncontrolled banging attacks. Messiah's vocal performance is outstanding which additionally kicks the material. "Spellbreaker" or "The day and the night" turn out to be exactly that kind of heavy doom shells that Candlemass got their cult status for and will see their die hard fans burts into tears of joy. The Swedes present a very self-conscious comeback album that lets almost forget the achievements of the past - Candlemass is the new benchmark in doom! (Jürgen Tschamler - April 2005)
