Other countries, other Christmas traditions
In Austria, things can sometimes get pretty spooky at Christmas. Father Christmas does not come alone, but has a demonic accomplice in tow: the Krampus. According to popular belief, this scary figure with big horns and shaggy fur haunts all children who have not been good. In the course of time, however, the image of the Krampus has changed, and the sinister creature now enjoys a large fan base, and many Krampus parades with elaborate costumes take place throughout Austria, particularly in December.
In Germany, things don't get spooky at Christmas, but they do get a little bizarre: some Christmas trees have a cucumber hanging on them alongside glittering baubles and lots of tinsel. The tradition of the Christmas cucumber probably comes from the 20th century. Poor families with lots of offspring could not afford a present for every child. Therefore, only the child who first discovered the cucumber hidden in the Christmas tree received a little something. Even today, the cucumber is a nice reminder that we should be grateful for our gifts - even if once again there was only a pair of socks.
In Norway, calling Christmas the "most magical time of the year" takes on a whole new meaning: according to Norwegian folklore, Christmas Eve is the time of year when witches and ghosts get up to mischief. To keep witches from playing tricks, Norwegian families hide all the brooms in the house - and with them the means of transport for the unloved pests. Actually, we should all follow the Norwegians' example: leaving the broom and other cleaning utensils in the cupboard over the holidays sounds like a great plan!
Also as crazy as witches, is the fact that Father Christmas is not the centre of attention in all countries. In Ukraine, it is a tradition to hang a spider's web on the holidays. This custom goes back to an old Ukrainian folk tale: many small spiders decorated the house of a widow who - much to the regret of her children - could not afford any decorations. Sweden is also a beastly country. In the far north, it is not a gentleman with a white beard who brings the presents, but the Yule goat.
