by Marcel Anders (08.10.2007) Two years after the ambitious "In your honor", Dave Grohl and his fellows return with a true hitter. Produced by the legendary Gil Norton, who also supervised the 1997-CD, "The colour and the shape", the twelve new songs prove to be the most variable and best in the band's career. On the one side, you have the huge, dynamic rockers with phat guitar salves and anthemnic singalong vocals ("The pretender", "Cheer up, boys"), on the other side there are beautiful 70s-excursions combining acoustic with electric sounds breathing the spirit of Led Zeppelin, Free and Deep Purple ("Let it die", "Come alive"). In addition, as the topping on the ice so to say, there are the emotional ballads featuring Dave on piano and acoustic guitar ("Home", "Stranger things have happened"). Still, the guys don't hesitate to incorporate instrumental songs, like "Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners" or brave rhythm and time-changes. What was consciously split the last time was now combined for a harmonic whole. And that rocks like hell. Thank you, guys!
