What do lumberjacks, Kurt Cobain and men with rustic tastes have in common? Right! They all wear flannel shirts. Logical, because the checked shirt is a classic that offers many advantages: The soft fabric makes them particularly cosy, robust and, thanks to the traditional cut, both comfortable and stylish.
These shirts began their careers as common clothing for forest workers and other workers in the United States. At a time when men were obliged to wear shirts with buttons and collars everywhere and at all times, resourceful tailors combined this requirement for lumberjacks and the like with the resistant and warm flannel fabric. In the meantime, however, men no longer have to swing an axe to be able to wear the checkered shirts - even if one is still allowed to do so, of course.
At home in the forest or the concrete jungle
Flannel shirts for men can be used for many styles. They feel at home in a relaxed work environment or at university as well as a cosy evening in a pub or at a concert. With the latter, fans of grunge and indie especially like to wear this checkered classic. Flannel shirts can be easily combined with trousers or jeans and look particularly casual when worn open over a t-shirt. A popular way to wear the shirt is with the sleeves rolled up to your elbows. This way, tattoos and festival ribbons also come into their own. In a more formal setting, just tuck the buttoned shirt into jeans - so maybe not the right choice for cloth or harem trousers! However if you do find yourself in the forest holding an axe, then you are already dressed appropriately.
