Crazy, sexy and reckless - this is Harley Quinn - a cartoon character conceived from the imaginations of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini for DC Comics in the early 1990s. DC tested whether the female villain would work in their comic book universe first, with guest roles in 'Batman Thrillkillers' and 'Batman of the Future - The Joker Comes Back'. But then, in 1999, the time had finally come: Harley Quinn was accepted into the DC Comics universe with her own series.
Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn
In the graphic novel 'The Batman Adventures: Mad Love', (1994) we are told for the first time how Quinn became an insane lunatic. Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, (as she is actually called), was not always rampant and vengeful and was once an intelligent young psychiatrist. However, her own laziness together with her penchant for recklessness got in the way. Instead of studying, she used her charms to seduce the faculty and got an 'A' in her College degree. After that she got a job working in Arkham Asylum, Gotham City's mental hospital. It's a job that nobody would choose voluntarily, but Harley Quinn has a tendency for the daring. The madder the better!
Quinzel and The Joker
In the Arkham Asylum, Quinzel has to deal with many broken souls, the most prominent of whom is the Joker himself. His disturbing charm irritates the inexperienced psychiatrist so much so that she falls for him unrestrainedly. Quinzel and the Joker become bizarre lovers and The Joker gives her the name Harley Quinn. Driven by their peculiar love, The Joker manipulates Harley Quinn into helping him escape from Arkham Asylum. But when her jail breaking ways are uncovered, she ends up becoming an inmate herself, sparking her descent into full-blown madness.
Harley Quinn escapes from the mental hospital when Gotham City is hit by an earthquake. In hindsight she probably should have stayed locked inside because after her love affair with The Joker, he tries to kill her. The Joker doesn't want Quinn to distract him from his work and so he lures her into a fairground rocket. Quinzel, who is once again blind with love, gets into the infernal device. She takes off, shoots in the air and is damn lucky: She survives!
Quinn ends up injured in Robinson Park and is found by Poison Ivy. Ivy takes Quinn home and gives her a serum. This not only makes her healthy, but also gives her superhuman strength. Together they plan their vendetta against the Joker and Batman.
Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad
In the film 'Suicide Squad', released in 2016, a team of criminals is formed: the US government recruits dangerous and insane criminals to use on risky assignments. Quinn is one of the members of this strange suicide mission and is supposed to fight for the government alongside Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc, Enchantress and Katana. To keep this band of crazy criminals in line they are each implanted with a tiny device, which will explode if they disobey their orders.
In the original comic series Harley Quinn wears a red and black latex outfit, but in the film the character played by Margot Robbie wears shorts, a shirt with the slogan 'Daddy's lil Monster' and a red and blue jacket. She also carries a baseball bat with the words 'Good Night' written in capital letters down the middle. But despite the wardrobe changes, one thing remains the same: The love-hate relationship between The Joker and Harley Quinn (or Pumpkin Pie as he affectionately calls her).
