Dr. Martens – The alternative Cult Shoes

After suffering knee problems, the German doctor wanted a sturdy boot with a softer sole, so he made one himself using old rubber and leftover leather.

The design quickly became popular, and it wasn't long before Märtens opened a factory in Seeshaupt, near Munich. Soon afterwards, the British family-owned company Griggs acquired the licence to manufacture Märtens' air-cushioned sole design. That's how the brand we know today was born. The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line in 1960. The original 1460 Classic boots were designed and marketed as durable work boots. The name 1460 refers to the launch date of the first model: 1 April 1960.

Everything changed when Pete Townshend, guitarist of the legendary band The Who, started wearing them. Suddenly, these sturdy work boots became a symbol of individuality and resistance. By the rise of grunge in the late 1980s, Dr. Martens had become a global phenomenon. Back then, they were difficult to find outside the UK.
