Sandals - The oldest shoes in the world?

At the very least, the sandal is one of the oldest forms of footwear in the world. What is interesting here is that the sandal has evolved similarly around the world in different cultures. The slanted-strap sandals originated in sub-Saharan Africa, which refers to the part of the African continent south of the Sahara. These sandals have a slanted strap that goes along the back of the foot. Cross-strap sandals, as the name suggests, have straps that run in a cross shape across the top of the foot. This variation of the sandal comes from South America. The toe peg sandal, which originated in India, is also very characteristic. It resembles the flip-flop we know today, but it is made of wood and has a peg that is held between the toes.

The so-called baker's sandal, depending on the design, is almost more like a closed shoe with slit-like openings. This sandal was developed in Europe. Then there is the toe ring or thong sandal, which developed in Egypt and in Japan (here they are known as Geta or Zōri). The thong sandals have been popular since the beginning of the 21st century, especially as a flip-flop variant. The toe ring sandals are similar to their related sandals, but here the sandal is held at the big toe with a ring. The cross-strap sandals are characterised by the strap that runs across the back of the foot. Particularly well known here are the so-called gymnastic sandals, to which orthopaedic and foot gymnastic effects are attributed. They consist of a wooden sole and a leather strap.

Funny sandal facts to brag about

Did you know that the flip-flop is so called because of the sound it makes when you walk? Keep an eye out for it next time you're wearing your flip-flops on the beach. But you probably already knew that, didn't you? What about the cool fact that ancient drawings of sandals have been found among the ancient Egyptians, for example in Tutankhamun's tomb? Sandals are that old, if not older! In some African cultures, you can even tell the social rank of the wearer by the height of the sandal's bottom. Fascinating, isn't it?
