Neofolk

Neofolk is a controversial genre in the scene because it is repeatedly associated with right-wing tendencies. Even the followers of the neighbouring genre neo-folk often keep a clear distance. Characteristic of the music is a sound tapestry of synthesiser music combined with acoustic instruments such as flutes, drums or string instruments. Acoustic guitars are also used. Thematically, neofolk songs are about ancient nature religions, the Middle Ages, mysticism, magic and spiritualism. Often the works of poets and poetesses become lyrics. Very well-known representatives of neofolk are Death in June and Sol Invictus.

You might think that neofolk is a new music genre in the black scene. But it isn't. Here, too, the roots go back to post-punk, more precisely to the punk band Crisis. Two members of this band founded Death in June in the early 80s. At the beginning, they also made more post-punk music, until they later found a musical home in self-founded neo-folk. Founding member Tony Wakeford left the band and later founded Soul Invictus. The former guitarist of the original band "Crisis" founded the band Sex Gang Children with other musicians. Today, the genre of neofolk also includes bands like Kirlian Camera, Hekate and Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio.
