Neoclassical music

It's hard to believe, but neo-classical music, which is very popular in the black scene, also goes back to post-punk. If you listen to the music of the Venomettes, for example, who emerged in the post-punk environment in the mid-80s, you will hear classical instruments and opera-like singing. Members of the Venomettes also mixed in the well-known post-punk bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees or the Virgin Prunes. When the band In The Nursery then came out with their album Stormhorse at the end of the 80s, the neo-classical genre was born in the black scene. At the same time, Dead Can Dance also appeared on stage with classical instruments. Other representatives are and were Ophelia`s Dream, Arcana, Dark Sanctuary or Love Is Colder Than Death.

Characteristic for the genre of neo-classical music are the - predominantly female - operatic vocals and the use of classical instruments. But it does not necessarily have to remain classical music in the true sense. Synthesizers or sound effects such as bells or samples are also used. There is also experimentation, for example with African percussion instruments, Australian didgeridoos or Asian string instruments. There are no limits to the musical imagination. Occasionally, the neighbourhood to Ritual or Dark Ambient becomes clear. On stage, the neo-classical bands often offer an ambience reminiscent of a visit to the opera.
