by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (21.07.2008) If Warrel Dane hadn’t talked so much about the new Nevermore material in an interview concerning his solo activities, you would have had reason to doubt a further existence of this Seattle institution. With catchy, melancholic songs, vocal artist Dane focuses on the part a bit disregarded in his main band - and blond axeman Jeff Loomis announces he’s releasing an instrumental album. But at least one track, "Shouting fire at a funeral" features - apart from excessive soli and the complex song structure you expected - a strange and high-pitched singing voice not sticking to the usual verse/chorus scheme, though. "Opulent maelstrom" - the name’s the motto: shredding and epic-ecstatic guitar work at its best. Loomis focuses on emotional melodies - and takes the foot off the gas in "Azure", for example -, so the demonstrations of his technical prowess are not only material for the connoisseur. With his well-balanced and tough production, Neil Kernon shows Loomis as a star, but not as an inconsiderate egotist.
