by Oliver Kube (19.07.2007) The original guitarist, James Iha is not part of this reunion of one of the most important bands of the 90s, nor is one of the two female bass players, Melissa Auf Der Maur and D'Arcy Wretzky. A fact that let many critics guess that Smashing Pumpkins-mastermind, Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin would try to revive their musically interesting but commercially bombed Independent project, Zwan. But already the opening "Doomsday clock" radically wipes away all fears. Pumpkins-typically as in times of their top-records, "Siamese dream" (1993) and "Mellon collie and the infinite sadness" (1995), the band presents itself also on the following "Bleeding the orchid" and "(Come on) let's go": in times very brute but at the same time atmospheric and extremely melodious. A perfect comeback culminating in the (also lyrically) most interesting and very epic song, "United States". A merciless count-off with the American socitey as in this intensity it could only come of Billy Corgan.
