13.Heavy metal breakdown
by Matthias Mineur (04.10.2006) The reaper sings ballads - at least an undertaking that needs getting used to. With a still piano, the song comes creeping, the soft voice is initially hardly recognisable as that of Bolle Boltendahl and also the lyrics about love, pain and longing ("Yesterday, when you left me on my own, yesterday our love was very true") doesn't quite fit Grave Digger. Then the first heavy guitar comes in and Boltendahl lets his vocal chords vibrate - that's when you finally know you're in the right movie. Guitarist Mani Schmidt adds a heart-warming solo and brings in some pathos. So that's the way Grave Digger work in 2006 after their change of labels? Fortunately only partially, because the rest of the album is made up by two heavy songs, one orchestral version of "Yesterday" as well as the extra bonus DVD "Live at the Machina Festival 2001". That's where the Metal is forged really heavy and the long hairs are shaken. That's how we want this band!
