by Stefan Frohne (19.07.2007) It was hinted at in the past that the permanent integration of a drummer would change the music of Apocalyptica. And indeed: on "Worlds collide", the drums are more present than ever before. Yet, if you now think that the Finnish cello virtuosos would be on their way to musical triviality with conventional ingredients of a Classic Rock band, you're proven wrong. By the always present rhythms, the arrangements give new freedom to Eicca, Paavo and Perttu that often result in fascinating sound experiments. The first single, e.g., "I'm not Jesus", in which Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman delivers an outstanding performance on the mic, has an almost Nine Inch Nail-kind of flair also if you'd always recognize that it is Apocalyptica performing here. Also the list of guest musicians on "Worlds collide" is interesting: Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) and Mats Leven (Therion). This variety confirms that the concept "Apocalyptica" that initially may have appeared a bit limited has still ways to progress and is still thrilling. Remarkable is also the guest appearance of Till Lindemann (Rammstein), who together with the Finns performs a brute, but very emotional interpretation of the David Bowie classic, "Heroes" in its German variant, "Helden".
