by Sonja Angerer (14.09.2007) For three long years, the fans of the synth rockers, The Birthday Massacre had to wait for a new sign of life – but their patience is more than compensated. E.g. with "Weekend": the fast mixture of 80s-electro-sounds, Folk-Pop vocals, and spacey guitar walls is such a merciless ear candy that it doesn't seem false to predict this song a bright future among the club classics of the decade. Hardly less addictive are also "Science", a danceable track strictly marching forward, and "Redstar". In the latter, it's the contrast of the extremely lovely chorus and the incredibly phat, brute guitars that not only fascinates but also makes this song a longtime burner. But The Birthday Massacre is more than that. "Movie", e.g, is an epic piece, almost soundtrack-like. In "To die for", you may hear the water in the back, but this song is but splashing along but rather creates a bittersweet energy. A thoroughly fascinating album without any weak spot.
