by Patrick Schmidt (09/02) "Volcano", the fifth album meanwhile by the Norwegians, Satyricon, is ì musically in the same vein as "Rebel extravaganza", with the difference that ì Frost and Satyr on the new album don¦t appear as cool and sterile any more. ì Of course, you'll experience the cold on "Volcano", but by the homogenous ì production you feel like wrapped in a warm blanket. Black Metal far from all ì conformity, as unusual as unique and consequently only made for a certain ì sort of people. Still, the duo surprises with very catchy, simple tracks, ì such as the short "Fuel for hatred" or the fierce "Possessed". On the other ì side stand overflowing, epic tracks, like the seething "Angstridden" or the ì secret title track, "Black lava", clocking in at almost 15 minutes. The ì sporadic appearance of the exceptional Norwegian Jazz-singer Anja Garbarek ì adds further depth and creative courage, two attributes that many other ì Black Metal bands are still lacking these days. So, "Volcano" is an ì absolutely interesting album that I even prefer to "Rebel extravaganza". ì (Patrick Schmidt - 09/02)
