by Jürgen Tschamler (null) It took twenty years until the legendary Virgin Steele debut now sees the light of day as the official re-release on c.d.. Collectors trade the first albums (on vinyl, of course) of the band around David DeFeis with horror amounts. So it was really a necessity to release the first two albums on c.d. now. Musically, "Virgin Steele I" is one of the big highlights of the 80s. The songwriter-duo, DeFeis/Starr already offered top-notch Heavy Metal that was hard to compare. On this album, you get four previously unreleased songs (Lothlorien, The lesson, Life of crime, Burn the sun), the latter two were later recorded in a different version on the second album of the band. Furthermore, four of the album tracks were re-vised and re-recorded, and they really differ from the originals. The material has little to do with Virgin Steele of today, they just sound a lot like 80s but nevertheless no worse, just edgier and less symphonic. A worthy re-release of this classic.
