by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (21.12.2006) This hard-drinking quintet has always seen themselves as the true heirs of the most powerful of all Bathory-Viking records: "Hammerheart" and "Twillight of the gods". With their fifth epic and its two songs clocking in at almost one hour, they further progress the concept of Quorthon and don't give a fuck about commercial aspects or the usual formats. In the spirit of "Baptised in fire and ice", "V: Hävitetty" pays tribute to the icy cold as the blazing fires. Mountains are crossed, oceans conquered, battles won at land and on the seas. Tragic and heaviness rule the life that Moonsorrow sing of. If you especially like the rattling Black Metal moods, I can recommend the first two records of Darkwoods My Bethrothed, the Finnish pioneers in this genre! Despite the similar stylistics, alone by the cineastic tightness, Moonsorrow are clearly different than the neaty-folky roughneck atmospheres of Finntroll or the happiness of Ensiferum. This is the authentic wall of truth without romanticism.
