by Oliver Kube (19.07.2007) The title tracks starts extremely heavy. After a few chords, the typical bombast with Pop-appeal sets in. And at the latest when Ville Valo starts with his dark voice it is clear that this is HIM, the Gothic superstars. For their sixth album, the frontman had the vision for a sonic mixture of typical HIM sounds with classic records in Rock-history: Metallica's "Master of puppets" (1986) and "Loveless" (1991) of the Post Punks, My Bloody Valentine. At least the first part of this combination was a successful experiment. Especially "Passion's killing floor" and "Kiss of dawn" with their partly very aggressive, in fact often Hetfield & Co.-resembling passages should pleasantly shock many fans (and many former opponents?). HIM have successfully redefined their style without forgetting their identifying trademarks, like melody and heaviness. And a pile of hit candidates (such as "Dead lover's lane", "Cyanide sun") could be provided, too.
