by Jürgen Tschamler (20.04.2009) Quietly Obscurity have become the showcase for the German Pagan/Viking Black Metal scene. The quality over there has risen enormously and the scene is quite vital, so you don't have to think "Scandinavia" to name some good and unique bands of that genre. With their last opus "Schlachten und Legenden", Obscurity have risen the bar once more - after the first spin of their new album "Varar" it's obvious that they're here to stay: they have once again improved their skills. In spite of all the genre elements, "Varar" offers a lot of variety - and songs which will be even liked by the non-connoisseur. The tracks are really fast, but Obscurity don't just speed on with the foot on the pedal, they prefer to arise interest with hefty riffs and epic, almost mainstream-compatible, melodies. Thus, smashers such as "Varusschlacht", "Wer Wind sät", "Nordmänner"(an anthem!), and the title track are real ear candies.
