by Jürgen Tschamler (22.12.2005) Women in Power Metal are still rare - also in 2006. Yet, one of them is the Californian Power Metal band, Benedictum around front lady, Veronica Freeman. The album produced by ex-Dio, ex-Dokken, Jeff Pilson convinces by powerful songs that superficially seen could be called a cross of Savatage and Rainbow/Dio. What initially doesn't seem to sound very spectacular has its moments in the details. Veronica Freeman has a very charismatic voice that often reaches Dio-spheres which in addition to the song material provides a tremendous kick. The Savatage influence comes through the mega tight rhythm unit and the powerful riffs in tracks, like “Them“, “Two steps to the sun“ or “Valkyrie rising“. Here, they less go for filigree guitar lines but rather attacks the fan with powerful riff orgies. Benedictum is an edgy Power Metal album with some nice guests, too, by the way: Craig Goldy and Jimmy Bain. Very worth listening.
