by Manuela Liefländer (July 2004) After Megadeth landed on the commercial tracks - and failed it is even more surprising what Dave Mustaine presents on his new opus. Already the opener, "Blackmail The Universe" goes back to speed metal! But if you think the Americans would copy themselves, you're wrong, too. Already the second track surprises again with a keyboard passage and some ballad-like feel to it. Sure, this band had ballads before but this material sounds so fresh and vital that your heart starts beating! Of course, Dave Mustaine can't do without his proof of his own abilities with some solos - but this ain't definitely no minus for especially such solos are getting rarer and rarer so it seems. Apropos rare: on "Kick The Chair" we even find some clear thrash metal elements again, so Megadeth fans can be relieved. "The System Has Failed" absolutely convinces and is surely one of the best metal records this year!
