by Oliver Kube (14.07.2008) Nobody interferes with him - he doesn’t need to consider marketing strategies or other tactical measures: no, he can just be creative. This April, Trent Reznor celebrated his liberation from his major label record deal with his instrumental, mostly ambient double disc "Ghosts I-IV", and barely three months later, he follows up with a pure Rock album and real songs. Maybe "The slip" isn’t the most mature NIN opus, but it sure is the most energetic since the monumental "The downward spiral" (1994). The strongest tracks: the brutal Industrial monster "Discipline" (reminds you wonderfully of the wild debut, "Pretty hate machine"), the atmospherical piano song "Lights in the sky" and the brilliant "Demon Seed" which represents the complete career of the band in a nutshell. If Reznor carries on at that quality level, his independence of a record label is indeed the best thing that could happen to the artist - and his fans, too.
