by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (06.09.2007) The predominantly Portuguese Ava Inferi have two strong Black Metal-connotations: for one, like on the last year’s debut, "Burdens", band initiator, Rune Eriksen: better known as Blasphemer, guitarist and main song writer in the Norwegian genre-institution, Mayhem; for the other by the participation of female singer Carmen Simoes in the new recording of Moonspell’s Folk-Black Metal-manifesto, "Under the Moonspell". But how else could it be: despite all gloominess, Ava Inferi are very contradicting. Possibly like one of the Portuguese Fado inspired, modern version of The 3rd And The Mortal. Also the only album of the Spanish Elbereth could be named as a reference – if you’d add tons of melancholy. Interesting is the peaceful coexistence of pushing guitars, heavy rhythms, piano sequences and Carmen’s gentle vocals. But also that changes from alluring curring to opera-like winding roads. Light moments ("Oathbound", "La stanza nera") are succeeded by massive Doom. Fascinating strange.
