by Fabian Groth (12/99) Well, that took some doing! Compared to the two quite spontaneously created predecessors of the four Brits, the process of creating "The science of things" turned out as a longer lasting, very reflective piece of work. They never had reason to complain about a lack of success, just those calls about them being a plagiarism of the shining Seattle-lights never turned quiet. That way, it was clear what to aim for: strengthtening of their own identity. And indeed: This album turned out as an extremely personal matter, where the differences to previous creations remain quite small, but very accurate. If you are familiar with the first single "The chemicals between us", you will know what I'm talking about. By putting a lot of effort into the studio work, they sometimes even received an almost Pop-like result. This remains an exception - one of the few, always successful ones. All that together results in a traditional, but quite independent Rockalbum.
