by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (15.02.2008) No matter if the young, Greek guitar virtuoso overestimated his abilities, if he wanted to make his name known with all forces or if he is still looking for his musical identity: since Gus G. has parted ways with Nightrage and Mystic Prophecy, Firewind could bury the stigma of a project band – despite all line up changes. The compositions are more rounded off, often heavier and less self-indulgent. Instead of permanently pushing himself into the front, like Malmsteen does, e.g., Gus also allows his keyboardists, Bob Katsionis, to establish himself as a soloist. Apollo Papathanasio had no easy heir on the microphone but his references in classically-influenced Power/Melodic Metal are excellent. His variability can be seen in the catchy riff-rocker, "Head up high", in which he first sounds like Dio and in the chorus sings very clean. Also, Gus cannot be pigeonholed to a single style. "Mercenary Man" leads us to Ireland: guitar harmonies and Celtic melodies follow the paths of Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore. Superfluous: the hit-cover "Maniac".
