Prior to his early death, Chester personally announced a Grey Daze reunion for 2017 on social media. Since he never had the chance to start the reunion himself, his bandmates, friends, family, and various collaborators came together to give the music the second chance it deserves and to finish what the late singer had started. The musicians - longtime members Sean Dowdell (drums, backing vocals) and Mace Beyers (bass), along with Cristin Davis (guitar) - recruited themselves in 2017 to embark on this artistic and personal endeavor. As the successor to their critically acclaimed and fan-loved album 'Amends' from 2020, this next chapter of music is the culmination of their commitment to friendship. For 'The Phoenix,' the band teamed up with producer Esjay Jones and recorded a substantial portion of the album at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles.
