After an accident, the main character in 'Ayreon's sixth studio album, lies in a coma. He rethinks his life throughout the lovely, well arranged concept songs on "The Human Equation". As always, full of bombast with famous guest features and epic symphonic metal.

Hand on heart: which heavy metal fan did not hope really that Arjen Lucassen would continue his Star One project? But the Dutch multi-instrumentalist sets forth his own line of history and follows the comparably heavy metal-album with a more progressive Ayreon-release. That this does not only contain smooth sounds but also features some edgy stuff is part of the Ayreon concept. This time, too, Lucassen offers a collection of rock celebrities, including James La Brie (Dream Theater) and Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lads), Eric Clayton (Savior Machine), Heather Findlay, Magnus Ekwall (The Quill) or also Mike Baker (Shadow Gallery). With such people, there can nothing go wrong, especially because composer Lucassen again combines fine song ideas with arrangements that truly deserve the tag "Progressive". Short: "The Human Equation" is pioneering, not only for Ayreon, but for the whole genre. (Matthias Mineur - April 2004)
