by Marcel Anders (04.10.2006) At the Rock Am Ring/Rock Im Park festivals they were the sensation: the reformed superstars of Grunge, Alice In Chains. A band that quit the job because singer Layne Staley suffered drug problems from which he never recovered - and died! The band split up - only to try it again three years later, featuring William DuVall on vocals and Duff McKagan as their second guitarist. A line-up that concentrates on the classics that have lost nothing in fascination - that is shown by this compilation. Especially "Man in the box", "Brother", "Them bones", "Dirt", "Rooster" and "Would?" are works of genius: powerful, doomy Hardrock with phat riffs, edgy vocals, anthemnic refrains and morbid lyrics. A mixture that causes you shivers down the spine. At the same time, A.I.C. always had another side too, the acoustic side: the big, filigree creepers experimenting with flowering Psychedelia, simply featuring gifted musicians. Unfortunately, they have released only three records and three EPs in nine years.
