by Jürgen Tschamler (30.10.2009) With their new album, the Finns prove impressively that they belong to the Scandianvian scene leaders and are ahead of their competitors again. Once, the band was considered a mere clone of Stratovarius, but they have long outgrown that phase and have become a style icon of their own, setting trends and looking on a lot of epigones. At first, "The days of grays" sounds a bit complicated, not as catchy as the older material. But the album has depth and reveals more of its intensity with every spin! With this release, Sonata Arctica close the gap between "Reckoning night" and "Unia" - and also add some new accents. The instrumental opening track is followed by "Deathaura", which is kind of an epitome of all musical elements on the album: female vocals on an intense orchestral base - that's the beginning of the song which (after a short choir part) turns into a peppy faster piece with a lot of tempo and rhythm changes.
