by Oliver Kube (29.01.2009) Their ex-label boss Rick Rubin (Metallica, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers) also produced the fourth album of Garage Rock and Power Pop fronter / anti-capitalist Dennis LyxzΓ©n and his boys. "The cross of my calling", recorded in legendary Sunset Sound Studio in Los Angeles (among others, The Doors had recorded their most important stuff there), is a well-done return to the powerful but extremely song-oriented style of their brilliant album "Survival sickness" (released in 2000) which was the international break-through for the Swedes. In contrast to that time, they just have a more mature, crystal sound now. Among the highlights of this opus: easy-going "Child of god" with its cool Vox Continental organ solo (a clear reverence for Jim Morrison & Co.), roughβnβrocky "Black september", and crisp and Funk-laden "I am the dynamite". For those who still mourn the good old Refused days, this output will seem to be too smooth and focussed, though.
