7.Ahab's Oath
by Markus Wosgien (05.10.2006) I guess everybody has seen or read Moby Dick in his youth. For Ahab this classic was the basis for their work and their debut album "The call of the wretched sea". Yet, hardly anybody would have guessed that this story could be transferred in such a gloomy and threatening way. Imagine the scenery in which the huge whale appears out of the sea in a deep, dark night and slowly swallows the people. Ahab plays Funeral Doom, a completely gloomy and almost occult variant of Doom Metal. The music is performed in slow motion speed, low tuned riffs dominate the picture while singer, guitarist and keyboardist Daniel Droste growls with his profound voice. Wouldn't they have chosen the term Funeral Doom I would relate this to the Nordish cold of the first Black Metal albums and the unbelievably haunting melodies performed by Amorphis on their "Tales from the thousand lakes" opus, just much, much slower. The result literally sweeps you off your feet!
