by Patrick Schmidt (09/99) For me, Moospell remains a mystery - a positive one, though. Shortly before their real breakthrough with "Irreligious", the Portuguese came up with "Sin/Pecado", a progressive and artisticly very sophisticated album that turned out to be a commercial flop and demanded a whole lot of tolerance of the fans. Presumably, "The butterfly effect" will again divide up the opinions, because charismatic singer Fernando and the guys around him recorded an album which is quite different from the predecessor. The new album sounds more aggressive, guitar-focused and is recorded way rogher. Also, it offers bulky songwriting that doesn't ignite right away. I see it as an advantage, because songs like the hard, rhythmically impulsive opener "Soulsick", or the quiet "Can't bee" turn out as long runners. Through this album, Moonspell are able to reclaim territory and they bring up a very autonomous Metal-Album.
