by Jürgen Tschamler (01/04) Their last year's debut album was lavished with praise, which resulted in the fact that we now expected a clear progression of Thunderstone. The guys around the magical voice Pasi Rantanen don't disappoint. Not a single second! "The burning" sets forth the same musical direction as the debut but the compositions have heavily improved! Also the great melodies in combination with clearly fatter riff walls are outstanding - same for Pasi's vocal part. In my opinion, the keyboard parts were reduced a bit, so that the songs appear heavier. Predominantly in mid-tempo regions the songs settle nicely in the Stratovarius/Sonata Arctica region without having to submit to either of these bands. Yes, the band has become heavier. Every now and then the speed was increased - as you can hear in e.g. "Side by side" or "Tin star man". The virtuoso "Evil within" is catchy as hell. There is only one conclusion for this album: this is how perfect, fresh, Melodic Power Metal has to sound. A must for every metallic.
