Hm, does the metal fan need a Greatest Hits album? No matter if of Iced Earth or of any other band?... Yes! For "The blessed and the damned" pays well deserved tribute to the works of Jon Schaffer and his (changing) fellows. This man is an exceptional musician, this compilation a work show for all doubters. It begins with "Burning times" of he brilliant "Something wocked this way comes". Then, every longplayer between 1991 and 2001 is being introduced with one song each, as is "The melancholy EP". Only the cover album, "Tribute to the gods" was not included. And since there are no unreleased bonus tracks, "The blessed and the damned" is no must for fans who have all albums of Iced Earth, anyway. Interesting is that also the two Matthew Barlow-predecessors, Gene Adam and John Greely were really good singers. By the non-chronologic running order, the two discs got an identity of their own that almost creates an Iced Earth-album on its rights. If you are not familiar with all of Jon Schaffers career, "The blessed and the damned" is a fine introduction. (Lothar Landt - July 2004)
