by Oliver Kube (10.03.2008) Also on their third album, Otep Shamaya takes no consideration of her vocal chords. As one of the few Nu-Metal frontladies, she roars, screams, grunts and growls through sometimes apocalyptic songs ("Confrontation", "Eat the children") that are a pleasure to listen to. As effective as these anger attacks may be: even more impressive is the performance of the Californian in the calmer moments of the disc. Here, you can listen not only to her pleasant voice but also to the intelligent lyrics, too. The spherical ballad, "Invisible", the Industrial-hitter, "Communion" as well as the spoken-word-track, "Andrenochrome dreams", of course, are only the most striking examples. Another highlight on the album is the great cover of the Nirvana song, "Breed", faster than the original, and yet, not too far away from it. As a whole, "The ascension" is a variable album with an immensely tight, atmospheric sound and dominated by the charismatic singer in the most positive sense.
