by Benny Ramm (04/02) The Gathering...who wouldn't think of "Mandylion" at first. Despite the heavy due such a classic creates in a back catalogue the Dutch always managed to come up with new musical pearls. "Sleepy Buildings" is none different. Everyone who has followed the band from the early days on will know every single song on the album - except for one new one. Even grunt vocals from the really early days get a new face on "Sleepy Buildings". With her beautiful voice Anneke van Giesbergen elevates the great song material to noble status. An impudently great combination: acoustic instrumentation and Anneke's elve-like vocals create a dreamy, melancholic atmosphere. "Sleepy Buildings" is a document of a very special evening in which the audience was left breathless. Reduced to some sparse applause moments giving the main actors all freedom for their acoustical interpretations of their ingenious songs.
