Gee! With their fourth album, "Serpent's Embrace", the German Agathodaimon make a flawless abrupt change in style. Okay, the non-conform troop has never been a true black metal band, yet with records like "Blacken The Angel" could easily be filed under that genre. The first three songs of "Serpent's Embrace" are very compact, modern and extremely dynamic, "Light Reborn" even sounds like a Soilwork song. Where has the merciless fierceness gone? Some elements of it can be identified in the vocals but the rest can be called powerful metal with plenty of keyboards and changing scream/clean vocals. The killer is "Solitide", coming along in TripHop vein and by the aid of the ingenious female vocals reminds me of (later) The Gathering and (later) The 3rd And The Mortal. Hats off for this will to experiment . In the underground, the Germans will be stoned for "Serpent's Embrace" but the unprejudiced metal fan shouldn't keep that from having a listen! Very brave!
