by Oliver Kube (02.03.2010) "Venus doom" was pretty rough, a bit à la Paradise Lost - to record the next album, the Fins went to L.A. for the first time. Although Matt Squire, producer of Taking Back Sunday, was at the controls, album #7 by Suomi's finest doesn't feature US airplay material or Emo sounds, but mostly classic HIM stuff. Well, of course you have the immensely catchy anthems "Scared to death", and "Love, the hardest way" (both perfect for a single release...). Not only these two, but also "Heartkiller", starting with a Pop synthesiser à la A-ha, have a distinct 80s appeal. The two most impressive songs on this CD, though, are "Katherine wheel" with its calm start, developing into a mighty piece of Melodic Rock, and saturnine "Like St. Valentine" with those Soul vocals. Playing with stylistic antagonisms, but also following your own path - that has always been one of HIM's biggest assets, and they still stick to that.
