The fusion of high culture and black metal at the highest level - Satyricon & Munch.

Satyricon & Munch showcases two of Norway's most famous artists, Edvard Munch and SATYRICON, united in a groundbreaking artwork that blurs the boundaries between high culture and black metal music. The 56-minute instrumental work, created by SATYRICON mastermind Satyr, is conceived as a musical work that defies stylistic boundaries and goes far beyond any genre conventions.

Although the piece was written for the art exhibition Satyricon & Munch, it clearly has the emotional depth to have an impact in any environment outside the exhibition space. The new, unique, and highly acclaimed art exhibition can be seen at the MUNCH Museum in Oslo until August 28, 2022.

Satyr explains Satyricon & Munch: 'In the musical work Satyricon & Munch, you will find my musical reflection on the emotions that Edvard Munch's works triggered in me during the creation of the art exhibition. So you could say that the release of the album is not only a result of creating an exhibition, but also a reflection of my studies on Edvard Munch's life and his philosophy of art production - and my relentless desire to challenge myself as an artist. I appreciate his focus on emotions over simple technique, his enthusiasm for experimenting, and his determination to go his own way to the utmost. These basic values are exactly in line with those of SATYRICON, which is even more important in this case.

To make this work what it has become, it became clear very early in the process that we had to reverse the roles of instrumentation: what was complementary in the past now needs to play a leading role in parts. What appears in an ordinary song is not needed for this project at all - we had to consider these kinds of considerations. In order to create the emotional levels and atmospheres we were aiming for, the instrumentation had to be very diverse. That is why we used a wide range of analog old-school synthesizers, electric guitar, baritone guitar, bass guitar, drums, theremin, cello, viola, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, jouhikko, Hardanger fiddle, piano, just to name a few. Some of these instruments are particularly receptive to the musician's personal input and are very useful in creating the deep layers that were necessary for this project. It was important for us to break free from prefabricated approaches and strictly focus and reduce what was needed for this project.

The true nature of black metal is to negate and exceed boundaries, and although this work is different from anything SATYRICON has heard before, the tonality and personal handwriting can clearly be recognized by those who know SATYRICON well. We encourage everyone not to categorize the music, but to accept and respect that it is not necessary here. It is definitely not film music, it is not ambient, and it is not something that needs to be invented. It is SATYRICON.'

SATYRICON was founded in 1991 and is undoubtedly a legend in the black metal scene, which they have influenced from the early 1990s to the present day. Early works like Dark Medieval Times or The Shadowthrone are classics of the genre, while later works dissolve the boundaries of traditional black metal. The band has never closed themselves off from other musical influences over the years and has incorporated them into their music, leading to numerous awards, gold records, and number-one albums, as well as extensive headline Tours and festivals worldwide. With Satyricon & Munch, the band is now setting new standards in contemporary music with a monumental yet intimate musical work.
