by Andreas Reissnauer (01/01) In 1987, Carnivore released their second album, before the band split up shortly afterwards. Peter Steele, of course, then founded Type O Negative and the rest should be well-known. "Retaliation" unfortunately could not live up to the debut, but that, of course, could never seriously be expected. The album nevertheless is a killer-album that, seen apart from the debut, could still beat most of all other albums. The general sound of the album is a bit faster and because of the imporved production, less fierce. The highlights, in my opinion, are "Ground zero brooklyn", "Technophobia", "Sex and violence" and "Race war", the absolute hit of the album. Because of this song, because of the track "Jesus Hitler", and because of some misunderstandable pictures in the booklet, Carnivore were classified right-winged. A reproach that they of course denied, but the public did not really believe them until years later. Many will remember the first Type O Negative Tour which drowned in the chaos of steady bomb scares. Bonustracks of this album are the demo-versions of "World wars III & IV", "Carnivore" and "The subhuman".
