In 1992 Deviate came from the ashes of the Belgium Trash band Sixty Nine and the Hardcore combo Mental Disturbance. "Red asunder" celebrates their 10th birthday and as one might assume from the founding history Metal as well as Hardcore elements dominate the sound. The band adds a little flavour with a slight New School Rap ingredient which is never as obvious as on the LL Cool J-cover "Mama said knock you out" (feat. Biohazard) representing the first single release from the album. Deviate do not simply rely on Speed but exakt riffing, precise (double bass) drums, and skilled tempo variations. Exactly this energy is what makes songs like "Life of tragedy", "Red asunder" or "A bullet from every sin" so interesting (though the vocals become a bit one-sided after a while). Another good argument for buying "Red asunder" is the 12-track bonus CD included which features mostly unreleased tracks. (Matthias Mader - 07/02)
