by Alexander Ertner (05/02) "Quintessence"... there is no way to better describe the overwhelming new album by Borknagar. After the line-up changed once again and one or the other has started his side-projects, the band now sees Lars from Solefad new one drums and - very intensively - also on keyboards. Alone the first track, called "Rivalry Of Phantoms" is blowing your mind off: variable and innovative, Borknagar present their definition of Black Metal Anno 2000 to us. Very positive is the fact that they further leave the paths of the extreme arrangements and the choral sounds and rather incorporate a Hammond instead. Unbelievable? No, it's great that way! Why not celebrate vocals like in "The Present Is Ominous" animating me to look for a guest vocalist just to see that there is none! Why not run the vocals through the digital/analogue encoder in "The Ruins Of The Future"? Why not just love this album? Exactly, I love this album, because despite all complexity, "Quintessence" is above all things one thing: a damn great Metal album the should live up to every approach - in the best sense of the word.
